PROPER FIELD CARE

Proper FIeld Care

It is just as important to keep your trophy cold, especially the ears. As you all know, it's always warm over here in the desert, especially early season. You spend so much time, energy and money harvesting your animal, now is not the time to fringe on spending an extra $10 bucks on ice. Not just for the cape but the ears as well!

The ears are the first thing to get warm because they're so thin and it's extremely common to lose inner ear hair due to improper field care.

Tips on How to keep a Mule Deer Cape/Head Cold:

Sometimes a big mule deer will not fit in the cooler with the lid closed due to its Antlers. I recommend buying a Rubbermaid Bin (or similar) where you can actually place your deer head inside the Tote with the antlers sticking out. Cut two sections - one on each side of the lid - to where the antlers will be able to stick out of the top of the lid. This will make it to where you can seal the lid back on and keep the head and ears cold without the antlers getting in the way. I have included an example to the right for reference. P.S. Do not let your deer sit in ice water very long. That can be damaging as well.

  • Remember, bird mounts are fragile. Diligent care should be given when placing your birds in and out of your transportation vehicle.

  • Dust them every 3 or 4 months with a feather duster - going with the flow of the feathers, not against them.

  • Wet birds are ok. make sure to wash the blood off the feathers as blood can stubbornly stain and be VERY difficult to clean. Wrap a wet paper towel around the head, then place your bird in several plastic shopping bags and freeze immediately. Place the head onto the back or on the belly. Never straight out.

  • Birds that are freezer burned are much more time consuming therefore cost more, so make every attempt to bring them to me as soon as possible.

  • Specialty poses are an additional $50.

  • Bird mounts are delicate, like I said above, think of them as fragile. Bring a couple bath towels with you for pickup. We will roll them up like a sleeping bag to place under a wing or maybe the neck for the ride to your home.

  • Almost always, folks bring me their bird frozen. This being said, I have a very limited idea of the condition of your specimen. It's a $15 dollar charge for a broken wing and $50 for a freezer burned bird so don't wait too long to bring it to me. I tell people that there are two types of bird mounts. A collector mount and a memory mount. A memory mount is this; No matter the condition of the bird, whether its shot to hell or poor feather plumage, you mount it for the memory. Now a collector mount is when the bird in your hand is so perfect [ no pin feathers, can barely find a shot hole, plump, fat, and late season, and you've shot 100 mallards in your past and this is the best one you have seen.]
